Did you know that Canada’s Favourite Bar is right here in St. John’s, Newfoundland? Air Canada’s enRoute Magazine and Rickard’s Beer teamed up for the #SAYCHEERS campaign, a national search for the most loved bar in Canada. Bar patrons across the nation voted for the Top 100, supporting their favourite drinking establishments in each province and territory, and when it was all done, O’Reilly’s Irish Newfoundland Pub was #1 in Canada! There’s only one thing to do after receiving such an honour – throw a party! Inspired by a love of live music, Newfoundland culture, and the art of hospitality, O’Reilly’s Irish Newfoundland Pub is celebrating 16 years of business this year. Owner Brenda O’Reilly put together a gathering of friends, family and regulars on December 10th to celebrate the win. There were pints all around and live music to get your toes tapping. I struck up a conversation with general manager Damian Dubourdieu as he poured my beer. Damien has been with O’Reilly’s since 1997 and doesn’t imagine working anywhere else. “O’Reilly’s is a place where you enjoy coming to work… it’s so much more than the mechanics of doing the job, it’s the social interactions – the people come from all over the world and they keep coming back.” Damien calls the award a great feather in their cap and is proud to see O’Reilly’s receive national recognition – “to be recognized on a national scale… that’s pretty impressive” he says.Damien isn’t the only fixture at O’Reilly’s, most of the musicians who grace the stage have been with Brenda since they first opened their doors. Irish-born Chris Hennessy moved to Newfoundland from Cork and never left. He has been playing at O’Reilly’s for 14 years – “What keeps me coming back? It’s just a great place to play. Great staff, great management, great venue – O’Reilly’s has it all.” When he heard about the award he said it was “magic… well deserved and we’re all very excited.” Fergus O’Byrne is a well know Newfoundland musician and was the very first (along with the late the late Dermot O’Reilly) to ever play O’Reilly’s stage. Fergus thinks O’Reilly’s is more than deserving of their new title – “They’re very respectful of their performers and they’re constantly looking for new ways to increase the pleasure of their customers – we’ve been putting on a Sunday session that’s been attracting a lot of young people to the bar – performers as young as six years old are welcome to take the stage. It reminds me very much of the old-style pubs in Ireland – it’s a very special place.”The party kept on as more loved ones spilled through the entrance and musician after musician took the stage. We were treated to a dance by Stevie Lane – he’s been having a nightly scuff at O’Reilly’s since opening day and, at almost 80 years old, has no plans on stopping anytime soon. Just when I thought the evening was coming to a close, the bar was treated to a surprise performance by none other than Alan Doyle and his band- you never know who might take the stage at O’Reilly’s – this is a place where the unexpected is the norm.
